Lantern (Dev Build One)
The First Public Build of Lantern!
Welcome to the first development release of Lantern.
Lantern was built from the ground up with two simple goals: remove the headache of hosting your own Minecraft server, and remove the monthly price tag of hosting Minecraft servers.
Setting up a Minecraft server can seem extremely daunting. Dealing with Java, server files, config files, backups, ports, networking and command line tools... what an absolute mess.
If you don't want to do that, your next option would be paying to host a Minecraft server and spending ten bucks a month for about 34 megabytes of RAM.
Lantern takes away both of those problems in one desktop application.
Simple. Quick. Reliable.
Lantern provides an extremely quick and simple way to create and manage a Minecraft Java server.
Create a server by choosing the Minecraft version, server type and any resources you want to use. Lantern handles the rest.
Once created, servers can be configured directly from the Lantern dashboard.
Forget Port Forwarding.
One of the biggest barriers to self-hosting is getting other people connected.
Lantern includes its own networking system designed specifically for this.
Instead of configuring your router, knocking your mother off the internet for three days, exposing your IP to unknown and freaky hackers, and asking your friends to install additional networking software, Lantern connects your server to the Lantern relay, getting you online in quite literally a couple of minutes.
Your server receives its own customisable Lantern address that you can give directly to your friends.
Your Server. Your Computer.
Lantern isn't traditional Minecraft hosting.
Your server runs entirely on your own hardware, meaning your world and server files remain on your machine.
Lantern purely provides the tools to make this happen, giving you the convenience of managing your own server while keeping your files private and under your control.
Server Management
The first Lantern development build already includes a lot of features, with plenty more to come. Here are a few notable ones:
- Multiple Minecraft servers
- Vanilla and supported custom servers including Paper, Forge and Fabric
- Minecraft version selection
- Simple server commands
- Configurable RAM
- Player controls including player limits and whitelists
- Live server console
- Server logs
- Server icons
- Java configuration
- Server deletion and management
Backups
Lantern includes an integrated backup system allowing you to create backups without manually copying Minecraft folders.
Backups can be viewed and controlled directly through Lantern.
Built-in Networking
Lantern's networking system has been built as part of Lantern itself, rather than requiring you to set up a separate tunnelling application.
Lantern handles server registration, authentication and tunnel connectivity for you.
Built for Beginners and Professionals
Lantern is intended to be approachable enough for someone creating their first Minecraft server, whilst still giving the nerds plenty of settings to customise things a bit more.
More to Come!
Lantern Dev Build One is still very early in development.
There are still unfinished features, bugs, and plenty of things my little brain hasn't figured out yet.
I WILL continue to expand and work on features. That is a promise from the very depths of my heart.
Thank You
If you are one of the first people testing Lantern, thank you so much.
Feedback from these early builds will help me mould and shape Lantern into what we all want and would like to see, not just my meathead self.
Welcome to Lantern.
